Student support in literacy for opinion writing prompt. This prompt asks the student to use information provided in a visual context (i.e. maps) to write an opinion piece to help a parent decide whether to move to the leeward or windward side of Oahu. Prior to beginning this piece, student instruction for science GLE 0507.8.1 begins with the student creating an informational brochure for tourists traveling to either Australia or the Sierra Nevadas. Both of these locations have distinctive activities and terrain associated with the leeward and windward sides. Students would search for information about the activities for tourists on both the leeward and windward areas. The brochure template is uploaded in the documents area to the right. The front of the trifold could be a beautiful picture of the chosen area- this could be cut out, printed, or drawn. The inside of the trifold includes a place to list activities. The larger inside full sheet is for the student to draw a map of the area that includes leeward, windward, legend items and labels. The back is for student information and there's a discretionary area left blank.
